US military conducts strikes against Iran

CENTCOM has said Tehran violated the ceasefire by targeting a Singapore-flagged cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz

The US has conducted airstrikes in Iran for the first time since a preliminary peace agreement was signed on June 17.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American aircraft struck missile sites, drone storage facilities and radar installations on Friday in response to a drone attack on the Singaporean-flagged commercial vessel M/V Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz a day earlier.

Iranian media, citing a military source, reported that warning shots had been fired hours earlier toward what the source described as “violating vessels” in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier on Friday, Trump blamed Iran for carrying out a drone strike on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a “foolish violation” of the ceasefire agreement with the US. He said one drone had hit the ship’s upper deck and caused damage, but that the vessel was able to continue, while US forces shot down three other drones.

Trump’s post did not identify the vessel or specify the time of the strike. However, on Thursday, the British military said a ship had been hit by a projectile off the coast of Oman.

The US strikes occur during a delicate period for both the US and Iran as they strive to negotiate a permanent resolution to the conflict. The US and Iran continue to negotiate the terms of the interim peace deal. Key issues include the passage of ships through the strategic strait and the future of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Both parties have a period of 60 days to finalise the details of the agreement.
